Promoting Peace Through Political participation a focus on Nigeria.

After the emergence of the Fourth Republic, except for 2003, there has been a steady decline in voter turnout for Nigeria Presidential elections. In 1999 the voter turnout was 52%; in 2003, 69%; in 2007, 57%; in 2011, 54%; in 2015, 43%; in 2019, 35.6%. The low voter turnout is not unconnected to electoral rigging and violence, and youths are often the perpetrators. But given President Buhari’s administration’s low performance (in fulfilling the primary obligations of government), especially their use of fatal brutal method in suppressing the 2020 EndSARS protest, the youths are politically awakened (with the highest number of 2023 voters’ registration) – and may not be readily available to be used for electoral rigging. The youths’ political awakening can make or mar the state, whichever path it leads is in the hands of the government. It will lead to the promotion of peace if the state and her functionaries become subservient and hence return the power of sovereignty to the people. It will lead to violence if the government continues on the path of oppression and negligence as they finally become captive of the horde they created for absolute control.
